The Belted Kingfisher at Mar Menor, Murcia, on 16.11.2009

Introduction
On 16.11.2009 AJH contacted RG to comment on some photos he had taken the same day at Mar Menor, Cartagena, Murcia. To him they were showing a female Belted Kingfisher (Ceryle alcyon) and he was asking wether we had any information of this species being kept in captivity. The photos (cropped and reproduced below) showed clearly this kingfisher species which, as from AJH was showing well in the area, flying around and perching on a wire. After checking BWP (vol IV) it became apparent that the bird was a juvenile (mixture of chestnut - grey feathers in breast band) and a female (e.g. presence of a broken chestnut secondary breast band, no bands in males, complete in adults)
This is the 1st record for Spain and South Europe. Slack, R. (2009) Rare Birds where and when (a full review of which is in due course for this website), lists 18 records in the WP: 3 in Ireland, 3 in Britain, 6 in the Açores, Portugal; 5 in Iceland and one from the Netherlands. Records fall from September (1), October (7), November - December (4). Besides, six more between February and June. Hence this bird falls within expected dates for a genuine vagrant.
Extreme W winds registered the week before could have been after this impressive record
