The Ivory Gull, phantom of the pack-ice

Lecture by Andrey Volkov (Moskou)

The distribution and breeding success of the Ivory Gull is closely related with the Arctic pack-ice, where polynyas (open water among ice-floes) are the best habitats for feeding (Polar Cod, Grey Shrimps, and scavenging following Polar Bears). Both breeding and wintering areas are located near the edge of the pack-ice. Ivory Gulls from Russia migrate to wintering areas in the northern Atlantic and northern Pacific. An adaptation to severe weather during the breeding period is the prolongation of eggs laying time for two weeks. Small chicks often die in the period with average temperature below 0°C, but chicks more than 10 days old can survive in periods of severe weather. Strategies to avoid egg and chick predation by Polar Bear and Arctic Fox include – small colonies on inaccessible cliff faces among glaciers (nunataks) – large colonies on flat tundra, which move to a nearby area after some years.
